Morocco has experienced an exceptional year in 2024, solidifying its position as Africa's top tourist destination. With an impressive 17.4 million visitors recorded, the kingdom achieved a remarkable 20% growth compared to 2023, surpassing Egypt’s 15.7 million tourists for the first time.
An Ambitious Tourism Strategy
Tourism Minister Fatim-Zahra Ammor celebrated this achievement, which aligns with Morocco’s strategic roadmap to attract 26 million visitors by 2030. The country reached its 2026 target years ahead of schedule, reinforcing its status as an unmissable travel destination.
Growth Driven by Two Key Segments
This positive trend is reflected in the performance of two primary visitor groups:
International Tourists (IT): 8.8 million arrivals, marking a +23% increase.
Moroccans Living Abroad (MLA): 8.6 million arrivals, a rise of +17%.
The near-equal split between IT (51%) and MLA (49%) highlights Morocco’s appeal both to global travelers and its diaspora.
Outperforming Pre-Pandemic Levels
Exceeding 2019 figures by an impressive 35%, Morocco’s success underscores the effectiveness of its strategy. Efforts include enhancing key destinations such as Marrakech, Casablanca, Fes, and Agadir, while promoting rural and sustainable tourism.
Leading Tourism Destination in Africa
These outstanding results position Morocco as Africa’s leading tourist destination. Strategic investments in infrastructure, international promotion, and traveler experience have clearly paid off.
Promising Outlook
Looking ahead, Morocco aims to sustain this upward momentum by leveraging its natural and cultural assets. A diversified offering caters to modern travelers seeking luxury tourism, ecotourism, and cultural experiences.
With a clear vision and tangible results, Morocco is emerging as a global tourism powerhouse, drawing millions of visitors annually and making a significant contribution to its national economy.
